Freyja T. Catton

MLIS, BFA (he/they)

Independent artist and writer

My name is Freyja T. Catton and I’ve been fascinated with words since I was very young. I’m a nonbinary and hard-of-hearing artist and writer with a specialty in art documentation. I think a lot about the kinds of questions people have and the language and resources they use to find information. I love learning about absolutely everything, and I find that everything is connected.

I wanted to use my experiences and my natural inclination to draw connections between systems and details, so I started writing. My expertise in documentation and information management means I have a long-term approach to short-term conversations. Through my conversations, research, and contributions to the arts and cultural sectors, I can build a stronger and more searchable record of contemporary Canadian art history. I want art history in our future to be more accessible, engaging, and inclusive than it has been in the past.

As an artist, my practice explores the connections between language and art through installations and print media. I enjoy the process of art-making and exploring puns, existentialism, and language phenomenon.

I believe that life is worth living when you can connect to people. Art and language are both forms of mark-making and powerful ways of processing and understanding the world.
